In vitro studies have demonstrated that Natrens L. acidophilus NAS super strain has distinct antimicrobial and antifungal activity against organisms, including C. difficile, C. albicans, E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphlyococcus aureus and Helicobacter pylori. 1,9,10,11,12,13,16,17,18,19,25,26,33,67,68,70,71,72,79
Significant findings resulting from two recent clinical trials:
University of California, Davis, in double blinded, crossover clinical trials found a significant reduction in yeast infections among college women who followed daily administration of L. acidophilus NAS suppository and an oral capsule (Healthy Trinity) containing L. acidophilus NAS, L. delbrueckii spp, L. bulgaricus LB-51 and Bifidobacterium bifidum Malyoth. 46 The other group used only the suppository containing NAS strain. The positive results, as cited in peer review research, may be due to the ability of L. acidophilus NAS super strain to produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). 34,38
In another clinical trial, held at Yale University School of Nursing, weekly administration of an L. acidophilus NAS super strain intravaginal suppository resulted in a 50% reduced relative risk of an episode of vaginal candidiasis in HIV-infected women. 80
In an in vitro study, L. acidophilus, NAS strain exhibited antimicrobial activity against H. pylori. 67

What makes the NAS strain unique?
An acidophilus strain that adheres to the intestinal wall, known as a "sticker," is superior to L. acidophilus strains that do not express this feature. It has a polysaccharide cell wall surface (similar to the Velcro phenomenon) that facilitates better adhesion. For the host to benefit from the consumption of L. acidophilus, the strain should be able to adhere and grow in the dynamic environment of the gastro-intestinal tract. Calcium found in milk provides natural adhesion to the intestinal wall. Adherence is a challenge for dairy-free products, which do not have natural calcium ions. The adherence feature distinguishes NAS as a super strain. 35
Healthy Trinity oil matrix capsules contain L. acidophilus NAS adhesion strain, a gram-positive facultatively anaerobic rod. This is an organism normally found in the major part of the small intestine beyond the duodenum. In vitro studies have demonstrated the following characteristics of certain strains of L. acidophilus, including NAS:
Help destroy invading hostile bacteria by producing natural antibiotic substances. 24,26,37,47,55,59
Produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) found necessary to inhibit vaginal yeast. 34,38
As an antimicrobial, may suppress undesirable microorganisms in the intestines, by some competitive means, e.g., production of lactic acid and other inhibitory
substances. 1,9,11,16,17,24,25,26,37,47,55,59,76,77
May help reduce levels of potentially harmful bacterial enzyme activities in the large intestine. 1,9,16,17,25,31,32,41,76,77
Help lessen the production of hostile yeasts. 26,34,38,71
May help maintain and support a healthy immune system. 43,62,63
Produce the enzyme lactase, responsible for digestion of milk sugar, lactose. 28,33,36,42,44,45,51,52
May help maintain normal healthy cholesterol levels. 2,4,22,23,27,29,30,49
