Hyperthyroidism develops when the thyroid gland is overactive and produces too much hormone. This condition speeds up the body’s processes resulting in symptoms that include rapid and irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, hands that tremor slightly, constant hunger yet weight loss, fatigue yet increased activity level, heat intolerance, stomach and intestinal spasms, and frequent bowel movements often accompanied by diarrhea. Hyperthyroidism can affect the eyes, including puffiness, irritation, increased tearing, and light sensitivity. Medical treatment includes antithyroid drugs, but surgical removal of the thyroid is sometimes necessary. Left untreated, hyperthyroidism can lead to death due to heart failure.

The most serious form of this condition is Grave’s disease. You may remember that both former President George Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush were treated for Grave’s disease while he was in office. Symptoms include those of hyperthyroidism plus a few additional signs, including enlargement of the thyroid gland that results in a bulging neck (goiter), and bulging eyes (exophthalmos).

Yersinia enterocolitica are the harmful intestinal bacteria that are involved with a hyperthyroid condition. This bacteria has the ability to provoke the production of certain substances that attach themselves to cells in the thyroid, resulting in the overproduction of thyroid hormone. More than 80 percent of those with Grave’s disease carry antibodies produced by the immune system to destroy Yersinia.

Yersinia enterocolitica overgrowth results when these colonies are not kept in check by L. acidophilus, B. bifidum, and L. bulgaricus through competitive exclusion. Once the overgrowth is prevalent, translocation of the bacteria—often through the bloodstream— can occur, making the Y. enterocolitica bacteria even more difficult to contain. The importance, therefore, of beneficial bacteria in inhibiting Y. enterocolitica is obvious.

RECOMMENDED PROBIOTIC REGIMEN

Take 2 capsules each of L. acidophilus and B. bifidum (or 1 teaspoon each powder), along with 1/2 teaspoon L. bulgaricus powder mixed in 6 to 8 ounces unchilled filtered water, three
times daily before meals.

Instead of the above regimen, take 1 combination capsule that contain all three super strains in an oil-matrix carrier, three times daily.
