Do We Really Need Probiotics In Our Drinks, Butter And Protein Bars?

June 06, 2016

Probiotics has turned into a marketing buzzword, incorporated into advertising plans for all kinds of products, but how do consumers know what works and what doesn’t? The market for probiotics is growing at an alarming pace with very little accurate information accessible to the public. Everything from packaged goods to cold brew coffee now claims to be a source of probiotics. This fad is leading to more and more “probiotic” junk food on the shelves at your local grocery store. But do you really need probiotics in everything you eat and drink? And what kind of bacteria can last heating,.... [Read More...]

New Research Shows Probiotics Early in Life May Reduce Asperger’s and ADHD Development Later in Childhood

New Research Shows Probiotics Early in Life May Reduce Asperger’s and ADHD Development Later in Childhood

May 23, 2016

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 11% of children 4-17 years of age (6.4 million) have been diagnosed with ADHD as of 2011 with rates of ADHD diagnosis increasing an average of 5% per year between 2003 and 2011. The condition has no racial or socioeconomic bias as it is reported in all ethnic groups. The statistics for other autism spectrum disorders including Asperger syndrome (AS) are just as grim. A new study brings hope for parents with newborns. Probiotics given early in life may be the answer to avoiding neuropsychiatric disorders like ADHD and AS later.... [Read More...]

Can Your Gut Microbiota Predict If You Will Get Gout?

Can Your Gut Microbiota Predict If You Will Get Gout?

May 18, 2016

Gout is on the rise around the world and gut health may be part of the problem. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases calls gout one of the most painful forms of arthritis out there and recent statistics show around 8.3 million people in the U.S. have it, that’s about 3.9 percent of the population. While 3.9% may not sound like much, another 21% of the U.S. population has a precursor to the disease called hyperuricemia. This new research suggests that the microbes living in our guts could potentially be used as a screening tool for.... [Read More...]

Some of the most interesting research involves the communication between the human brain and our gut. These latest findings offer new perspectives on how we may be able to improve our physical and psychological well being through early childhood physical activity. Vaginal Health and Probiotics – Women, Let’s Talk!

April 25, 2016

Ladies we all have a vagina, yet many of us are too embarrassed to talk about it. We don’t discuss it with our friends, our partners, and we’re often embarrassed to say the word vagina to our doctor. In this day and age, it’s so difficult to believe how we approach women’s health. Let’s face it, if we’re not comfortable with our own bodies, avoiding treatment when something’s wrong downstairs, can have serious implications for our overall health. Overcoming the Taboo How do we overcome the taboo and take charge, not just for ourselves, but our daughters and granddaughters when.... [Read More...]

Organic Farming and Pesticides

Organic Farming and Pesticides

April 18, 2016

The biggest growing sector of the food market by far is organic food, and while for many years it was considered a lifestyle choice of just a small group of consumers, it has now proven to be a mainstream lifestyle choice. Organic foods like produce, meat and dairy that used to be only available in health food stores or farmers’ markets, are now sold in most retail chain supermarkets. However, while there are numerous reasons to eat organic foods, organic farming does introduce some new concerns too. The Truth about Organic Pesticides Many of us think that organic food is.... Can Your Future Children be Affected by Your Diet Choices Today?

Can Your Future Children be Affected by Your Diet Choices Today?

April 11, 2016

Your diet choices today could affect members of your family who have not even been born yet. A recent study suggests that, while changing your diet today can help your body recover, a poor diet over the course of several generations can forever alter the digestive tract of your descendants within three or four generations. This means your great-grandchildren can suffer negative effects from what you eat today. Results from a Stanford University School of Medicine study suggest low-fiber diets, like those commonly consumed in the United States and other industrial societies, can result in health problems that you can.... Parabens and Endocrine Disruption – What You Need to Know

March 28, 2016

Our endocrine system comprises of a set of glands, and the hormones they produce that regulate many aspects of our existence, from sleep and sex to mood and metabolism. Probably, when you think about hormones, estrogen or testosterone are the first ones that come to mind. In fact, our body produces dozens of hormones that travel via our bloodstream and act as powerful chemical messengers telling our body what to do, and when to do it so that it can run smoothly and efficiently. Probiotics for Plants?

Probiotics for Plants?

March 21, 2016

Hardly a week goes by without us learning about new research on the positive benefits of bacteria. Most of it is thanks to the Human Microbiome Project (HMP) that was launched in 2008. Now, almost a decade later, researchers are delving into the microbiomes of thousands of other organisms. One particular microbiome that’s getting attention right now is the plant microbiome. If you’ve read any of our previous blogs how probiotics have helped in the animal kingdom, you’ll understand the enormous influence that Indigo, a startup company in Cambridge, MA, may have on reshaping agriculture through the use of probiotics..... Can Our Gut Microbiota Influence our Sleep & Wake Cycles (Circadian Clock)?

Can Our Gut Microbiota Influence our Sleep & Wake Cycles (Circadian Clock)?

March 09, 2016

Natural cycles, known as circadian rhythms, control the sleep/wake patterns of all organisms. These cycles tell some animals to become sleepy as the sun goes down just as circadian rhythms tell creatures of the night to wake up. They also affect other bodily functions, such as appetite and metabolism. Humans sometimes override their body clocks so that they can work night shifts, fly across time zones in airplanes and stay up late to study or play. This control over circadian rhythms comes at a price, however, as those who try to overcome the natural sleep/wake cycles are more vulnerable to.... [Read More...]

Are Humans Doomed to Return to the Pre-Antibiotic Era?

Are Humans Doomed to Return to the Pre-Antibiotic Era?

February 15, 2016

Even small infections would prove fatal if we lose the effectiveness of antibiotics – and it very much looks like that is happening. Doctors administer antibiotics to treat serious bacterial infections. At the beginning of the 20th century, pneumonia, tuberculosis and diarrhea were the top three leading causes of death. Now at the beginning of the 21st century, very few people living in developed countries die from these diseases, thanks in large part to the use of antibiotics. Many bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics today, however, and the problem seems to be growing worse. About Antibiotics and Bacteria.... [Read More...]

Why Snoring is a Health Concern & Exercises You Can Do to Help

February 01, 2016

You believe that you’re doing everything possible to live a healthy life style. You eat right. You exercise and you think your health is in great shape. What’s the last thing you’d consider to derail all that? Would you believe snoring? Snoring occurs while you’re asleep and your throat muscles relax, your tongue falls backwards and your throat becomes narrow. As you breathe in and out, your throat walls begin to vibrate. The narrower your throat becomes, the greater the vibration, and the louder the snore. A more serious complication of snoring is sleep apnea where the throat will completely.... [Read More...]
