When someone says probiotics, we hope the first thing that comes to mind is Natren Probiotics! If you’ve been reading our blog for a while you know that probiotics are a powerful way to improve digestion, boost immune health and so much more. But did you know that Natren probiotics can also be applied topically to your skin? You can even make your own face mask with just two ingredients!
The skin is our largest organ and home to its own unique set of microorganisms. The beneficial bacteria on the skin work much like the beneficial bacteria in our gut, providing a layer of protection and competing for space with bad bacteria and other pathogens. Normal skin care, like daily face washing, can remove some of your beneficial skin flora and it may benefit you to replenish this natural barrier. This do-it-yourself probiotic face mask combines two simple ingredients to create a luxurious mask that may help to:
The use of probiotics in skincare is not a new concept. For centuries, women have applied everything from milk to plant extracts to their bodies trying to enhance skin health and give their skin a pleasing glow. Natren’s Digesta-Lac contains our Lactobacillus bulgaricus LB-51 super strain, the use of L. bulgaricus applied topically to the skin dates back at least a hundred years, there’s even scientific studies from 1912 and reason to believe it was in use well before that! Indeed stories of Cleopatra, one of our favorite legendary beauties, tell us that she bathed in milk. Probiotics provide some of the most natural ingredients in the world designed to supplement your vital microflora and nourish at the same time.
To create this mask at home, you need only two ingredients. The first is something you might already have in your refrigerator if you are a fan of our probiotic supplements; Natren’s Digesta-Lac Dairy Powder . Natren’s probiotic powders perform exceptionally well due to a proprietary manufacturing technique that keeps the intrinsic supernatant intact. Not only are you getting the power of the probiotic bacteria themselves, but you also receive the added benefits of the supernatant. The “supernatant” is produced during the manufacturing process. At the start of the process, beneficial bacteria are grown using a balanced, nutritionally rich base called a “culturing medium”. As the bacteria grow and develop, this original culturing medium transforms into what is called a supernatant. While this supernatant is not actually living bacteria, it is intrinsically part of the bacteria’s environment, is nutritionally rich, and is beneficial to both the bacteria, and to the human or animal recipient. The second ingredient can be a bit tricky; you need aloe vera. If you have fresh aloe vera growing in your garden you can learn how to harvest your own aloe vera gel here. However, if you are purchasing aloe vera in a store you need to know what to look for. You want a product that contains virtually 100 percent aloe vera and little to nothing more. Many of the aloe products you see on the shelf at the grocery store or pharmacy say 100 percent on them, but that may not refer to the actual aloe vera content, it’s an unfortunate trick and often refers to the product being gel, so be weary of products that says “100% Gel” as that does not always equate to 100% Aloe Vera. Read the label carefully before purchasing to see what other ingredients are in the product. Aloe Vera should be the first ingredient listed (indicating it’s the main ingredient in the product). Most aloe products will contain some form of stabilizer if you’re unsure about the other ingredients listed we suggest checking all ingredients at the EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Database.
Mix approximately 1 tsp of Digesta-Lac powdered probiotic with equal parts aloe vera gel to create your skin mask. Gently apply the mixture to your face working it into the skin by moving your fingers in a small, circular pattern. You can leave the mask on from 10 to 30 minutes. After 10 minutes, your skin will feel moisturized. A 30-minute treatment offers deeper cleansing.
When you are ready, wash the mask off using warm water and then pat your skin dry. After using the mask, your face should feel smooth, soft and clean. The gritty consistency of the probiotic powder acts as a gentle exfoliator removing dead skin and dirt, leaving you with a fresh face while the aloe vera moisturizes. It’s a winning combination that will leave your skin looking refreshed for days. As Missy wrote on our website, “I just love this product its so cooling to the face, makes my skin so smooth, and goes a long way. I use it 3 times a week and my skin looks great. I will always use this as my favorite mask.”
